Adapt IT: Exporting to Paratext
EP: Exporting to Paratext
Introduction
In this module you will transfer your Adapt It text into Paratext for checking and revising.
Where we are
You have completed a chapter, section, book, or books in Adapt It that need to be revised and checked, and you have Paratext 6 (or above) already installed.
Why it’s important
The output of Adapt It is only a pre-draft. Once you have completed the adaptation you need to export the text into Paratext for further revision and checking. Paratext also offers many tools for verifying the consistency, words, characters, and formatting of your document. After the text is exported to Paratext, you or a consultant can start this process.
What you will be doing
To use your Adapt It translation in Paratext, you will first need to export the translation text(s). Next you will import these texts into Paratext and prepare for work.
Export the Target Text
- In Adapt It, open the text you want to export.
- On the Export-Import menu, click the Export Translation Text… command. The following dialog is displayed:

- Make sure Standard Format Text File is selected.
- Important: If you have been doing Back-Translations by adding free translations,
- Click the Export Filter/Options button. The Export Filter/Options dialogue will appear.

- Choose the radio button for Filter out selected Markers and associated text from the exported document.
- Tick the box beside \free[FILTERED] Free translation to hide the back translations in the export.
- Click OK to close the Export/Filter Options dialog Box.
- Click OK A file output dialogue will come up.
- Choose the filename you want and the destination export folder.
- Click Save to complete the export.
- If you have previously exported this file, windows may ask for permission.
- If you have more than one chapter completed, repeat steps 1-6.
Importing the text into an existing Paratext project
Note: You will need to have a suitable project in Paratext to import these exported texts. If you do not already have a Paratext project created for your language, please ask a consultant or trainer to help you.
ImageOnce you have exported your Adapt It texts, you can then import them into either a new (see above) or an existing Paratext project:
- If it is not already open, open Paratext by double-clicking on the Paratext Icon.
- In Paratext, open your project and make sure it is selected.
- As a precaution, make a Backup of the project (File > Backup …)
- thumb|Set the reference to the book you want to import the text into.
- If the Image button is displayed, then click on the button. The Import Book(s) dialog is displayed. OR If you have already imported text into this book the icon will not be displayed. So click on the File menu and choose Import Books.{Version 7: the Project menu and choose Import Books.}
- Select the file that you exported from Adapt It.
- ImageClick OK
A warning message is displayed stating that you are about to import books into Paratext. - Click OK to close the message.
- If there is already text in any of the books a further warning is displayed.
- Make sure Replace individual chapters(s) is selected. (Any text in the current chapter's of the Paratext project will be replaced.)
- Click OK. The file(s) are imported into Paratext.
Arranging the Paratext window for revision
During the revision process in Paratext, it will be useful to have two or three other reference texts available to view in the Paratext window.
Below is a sample setup in Paratext 6 with the text to be revised on the left and two other references texts on the right. The original source is in the small window to the lower left. There can be other, less-used references minimized (as seen by the (A) GRK icon at the lower left).
In Paratext 6
- From File menu, choose Open.
- Select My Projects or Resources
- Choose a resource or project and Click OK.
- ImageArrange these Windows into columns as needed.
In Paratext 7
- Open each resource/project you want using File>Open Project/Resource.
- Then choose Window>Stacked 2 Column or Window>Stacked 3 Column to arrange them neatly and automatically.
