Standards (DH)

What happens when there are no standards for:

  • Creating a dictionary
  • Charting text for discourse analysis
  • Creating a primer

Answer: Chaos No private company or organization would ever work this way and expect to succeed.

Standard Setters

You are the standard-setters for language software in your area.

By helping teams standardize on the best solutions, you will:

ResultExample
Prevent people from re-inventing the wheel. How many purchase order systems exist? Probably one per entity.
Provide structure, enabling teams to work more efficiently. If we promote a good antivirus, then teams are less likely to experiment with less effective ones. Sometimes people want direction, not choice.
Help best practises emerge, when many people work with the same standard. Think of how many tools have been developed to work with USFM code.
Increase the sharing of knowledge between project and teams. Teams can share tips and experiences in using the tools or standards when they meet.
Help teams to be more accountable for their progressProgress is measurable, and failure is preventable when teams are working the way you trained them.
Enable teams to focus on the task instead of the tools. Now the translation team can just hit print to output a draft for checking. No muss, no fuss. You've enabled them to spend more time doing what they do best.

For something to become a standard it needs to be:

  • Promoted
  • Accepted by the domain coordinators whose areas it influences (Literacy, Anthropology, Translation, etc.)
  • Taught in a workshop
  • Required as a data format

Interoperability Standards

  • Unicode
  • SFM
    • MDF
    • USFM
  1. XML
    1. OXES
    2. LIFT
